After losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, Irish star McGregor has not been in any fights at all. He was suspended after getting into a brawl in the crowd at that same fight last October.

This puts to rest any rumors of a remach, with McGregor announcing he is retiring from the ring.

Early this morning (26 March) McGregor shared his shocking news on twitter:

“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today.

I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.

I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.

Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”

Just a few hours prior to his tweet, McGregor appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show, stating that he ‘didn’t need’ to fight again as he was ‘set for life’. However, what made his announcement about retirement even more surprising and confusing, was him speaking about fighting Donald Corrone this summer, stating he was eager to fight again.

He told host Jummy Fallon:

“We’re in talks for July. There’s a lot of politics going on, it’s a mad game, the fight game

To my fans, I am in shape and I am ready. There are many opponents, in reality I can pick who I please.

I don’t necessarily need to fight. I am set for life, my family is set for life.

We are good, but I am eager to fight. We will see what happens, but I am just staying ready.”
