Back in 2016, then-UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was all set to duke it out against Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196.
It was that event that the infamous “red panty night” line was born.
The fight never came to be, though, as “RDA” suffered an injury to his foot that bounced him out of his much-desired showdown against “Notorious,” ending the hopes of his biggest payday in MMA to date.
After Rafael dos Anjos defeated Kevin Lee last Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 152, many people praised “RDA” for his performance and longtime MMA reporter Josh Gross pondered what would’ve happened between Conor and Rafael.
In true McGregor fashion, he took to Twitter to offer up his response by mocking dos Anjos for pulling out of their fight with a bruise.
As a result of Rafael’s withdrawal, Nate Diaz stepped in on short notice to face Conor, and defeated him via second round submission. A few months later, “Notorious” got revenge by beating Nate via decision. And one of the greatest MMA rivalries was born.
Still, we can’t help but to wonder how a fight between dos Anjos and McGregor would’ve gone down.
Though it’s unlikely we will ever get the chance to find out as Conor is only interested in big fights, and “RDA” is nowhere near a title and doesn’t have much draw without it.
