Conor McGregor is always must-see TV when he steps foot inside the Octagon.

And since he hasn’t competed in over a year, his return at UFC 246 is much-anticipated by him, his colleagues and fight fans around the world.

As he is set to face Donald Cerrone on Jan. 18, 2020, many wondered why that fight came to be.

Now, “Notorious” is explaining just why he chose Cerrone as his comeback opponent. And if you’re expecting a lot of trash talk, you might be sorely disappointed.

“I appreciate Donald, I have to say. He’s fought a lot of times since the last time I saw him, at the Aldo press conference many, many years ago.”

“He’s gone on and fought so many times,” he said during a recent interview with Ariel Helwani.

“He’s also a family man, with his grandmother and these things. I appreciate that. And I also appreciate his method he went about it, with the Proper whiskey. So much work goes into these things – to see that bit of respect, I appreciate that. I look forward to having a good bout.”

Naturally, since Conor has been out of the MMA game for so long, many are wondering just how he will look after such an extended hiatus. Especially since this fight will take place at 170 pounds.

To hear Conor tell it, as well as his team, he is back to his old self, and once the cage door closes, fight fans are going to be treated to something special.

“I’m happy to come back and have my comeback fight in the beginning of my season against Donald, and I look forward to it,” McGregor said.

“It’s going to be a good night, and I’m going to shine here on Jan. 18. I’m going to create magic inside the octagon, like I have done many times before.”

“But this time it’s going to be something special.”

McGregor has a lot riding on the fight, which will see him bank $5 million.

If he wins, he could be in line for a shot at the Lightweight title. Furthermore, a victory ensure that he will be on standby to fill in at UFC 249 in case Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson get injured.
