Conor McGregor may be fighting at welterweight for his UFC return, but he’ll still get a shot at the Lightweight title in 2020.
According to UFC president Dana White, if “Notorious” beats Donald Cerrone at UFC 246, he will be in line for a 155-pound title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Of course, Khabib has to defeat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in April in order for it to happen.
“If Conor can get through Cowboy and Khabib can get through Tony, then we’d be looking at a rematch with Conor and Khabib down the line here pretty soon,” said White.
Nurmagomedov defeated Conor at UFC 229 in October of 2018, in what was the biggest money-making PPV’s ever for UFC.
While there are other notable lightweights who are seemingly more deserving at a title shot, such as Justin Gaethje, McGregor is big business.
That’s why the promotion doesn’t mind hurting a few people’s feeling in order to make the biggest fight possible.
