UFC president Dana White recently went on record to say that Conor McGregor could very well face the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Dustin Poirier.
Now, he is doing a complete 180, as he recently told LVSportsBiz Guerilla Cross Radio that it will be Tony Ferguson to fight for the title after UFC 242.
“Khabib is fighting Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi in September,” White said. “Then I don’t know, we’ll see. Tony Ferguson just came off a great win this weekend over ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, and I’m assuming he’s next.”
So why did White suddenly chance course? It’s simple: Conor is super rich and doesn’t need to fight. And the motivation to do so might not be there right now.
“We’ll see what happens with Conor – what Conor wants to do,” White said. “Conor is super rich. It’s hard to get guys to fight when they’re super rich.”
Indeed, McGregor is “super rich,” once again making the Forbes list for being one of the highest paid athletes in the world.
Recently, Khabib shot down any hopes of a potential rematch with the Irishman, which means now Conor will have to sit back and wait how the division plays itself out.
That means we likely won’t see McGregor back in the cage until late 2019, or maybe even early 2020.
