There is no shadow of a doubt that Conor McGregor is the biggest star the sport of mixed martial arts has ever seen.
With his charismatic and sometimes brash way of selling a fight and hyping up events, “Notorious” has made sure that when he fights, everyone tunes in. And he has the PPV numbers, endorsements and cash to prove it.
But according to former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, there is a man who is ready to overtake Conor’s throne. And that is current 185 pound champion, Israel Adesanya.
“Listen, the walkout was great,” Bisping said during a recent episode of his Believe You Me podcast.
“He’s a star, he’s got charisma, all that type of stuff. And right now he’s poised to set to be possibly the biggest star in the UFC. He could even overtake McGregor at this rate. He really could. Well for one, he hasn’t got the negativity surrounding him. He hasn’t made all the mistakes. Now, who knows? He might go down that route, but I doubt it.”
Indeed, Conor’s image has taken a hit as of a late after he was involved in several out-of- the cage legal incidents.
That said, it’s safe to assume that once he makes his long-awaited return to action, he could very well make people forget about all of that with an impressive showing.
As for Adesanya, he recently became the undisputed middleweight champion by knocking out Robert Whittaker at UFC 243. He has yet to taste defeat.
Interestingly enough, Conor and Israel are repped by the same management team, and McGregor even showed his support for Adesanya prior to the fight.
