Khabib Nurmagomeodv hasn’t been too interested in a rematch with Conor McGregor since beating him at UFC 229.
However, after McGregor defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in just 40 seconds, Khabib may not have a say in the matter. That’s because Dana White has gone on record to say “Notorious” would be next in line for a title shot.
While everyone wants to see Khabib vs McGregor 2, Tony Ferguson could spoil those plans.
And while Khabib doesn’t consider McGregor to be the rightful No. 1 contender, he had to admit that a do-over with McGregor would do very big business.
“I think people want to see us continue what happened last time,” Nurmagomedov said when speaking to TMZ Sports. “They just want to see drama. If you ask people, ‘Guys, what do you think, who’s gonna win?’ 99 percent going to say ‘Khabib, like he did first time.’ Just people want to see a big drama show, only for this one.
“If we talk about money, this is good. We talk about drama, this is good. Talk about real lightweight contender or real lightweight championship fight, this is not good. This is not real championship fight. But if we talk about drama and money, of course this is good. I come here for show, to make my legacy. For my legacy, I have to beat tough opponents like Dustin Poirier, like Iaquinta, like other guys. Right now it’s Tony Ferguson. I have to beat all of them, like real contenders, not fake contenders.”
Conor was rumored to face Justin Gaethje this summer, but that fight has been scratched.
But it’s probably better for Conor, as he already has a title fight locked down per Dana White. So why take an unnecessary risk?
