Conor McGregor’s return to mixed martial arts (MMA) has everyone excited. Well, some more than others.
But the return of “Notorious” signifies that business will indeed pick up in more than one division, as Conor will face Donald Cerrone at Welterweight at UFC 246 on Jan. 18, 2020.
After that, he wants to go back to Lightweight to rematch Khabib Nurmagomedov. But those two divisions may not be only one who gets a piece of the biggest money-making machine has ever see.
Max Holloway, the current Featherweight champion, is excited to see Conor back. And if all goes well, he want a rematch at 145 pounds.
“If ‘Mystic Mac’ arrives, if he wants to be what he was a couple years ago when he was he was the best mixed martial artist in the world and he wants to do it again, I’m sure we’re going to run into each other or something like that,” Holloway said during a recent media scrum (transcribed by ESPN).
“I’m excited that he’s back in the sport and can’t wait for him to do his thing in January,” Holloway said. “We’ll see if Conor comes. We’ll see if ‘Mystic Mac’ is back and the way he’s training. But we get to see that fight. So I wish him a great training camp and you know, I can’t wait to see him go back in there.”
Conor was the last man to defeat Max Holloway at 145 pounds, defeating him way back in 2013. Since then, Max has won 13 straight fights and claimed the 145 pound title once owned by McGregor.
He will next defend his strap against Alexander Volkanovski in the co-main event of UFC 245 on Dec. 14, 2019.
