After Khabib Nurmagomedov retired at UFC 254 after beating Justin Gaethje in Abu Dhabi, the question everyone had was: What’s next?
Khabib leaves the sport as the undefeated and undisputed 155-pound champion, so that means two lucky and deserving fighters will get to fight for the title next.
And while it was easy to assume that perhaps the upcoming rematch between Conor McGregor and DUstin Poirier now be for the lightweight title, another fighter has different idea.
Former Bellator MMA Michael Chandler, who signed with UFC a few months ago and was in “Fight Island” to serve as backup for UFC 254, wants a four-man tournament to crown a new champion.
“Let’s be honest, I’m the new guy, I’m not going to come in and say, ‘Hey guys, I deserve a title shot. I’d love my name to be thrown into the mix. I’d love the opportunity to fight in a four man tournament for that title. There’s all sorts of different things the UFC could do, this is the biggest martial arts sports promotion in the world and I’m excited to be a part of it.
“But Conor, Poirier, myself, Ferguson,” he continued. “There’s some names that need to be fighting for a title so let’s make it happen.”
To be clear, Chandler would be fighting Tony Ferguson, and the winner would then face the winner of McGregor vs Poirier, set to take place on Jan. 23, 2021.
That’s really not a bad idea at all!
WHat do you think, do you likes those potential matchups to crown a new champion?
