There was a time when all Tony Ferguson wanted was a chance to fight and beat up former UFC dual-champion, Conor McGregor. In fact, during his quest to obtain the fight, “El Cucuy” coined the term “McNuggets,” using the term to insult the Irishman at every turn.
Those days, however, have come and gone as Ferguson now is looking to fry some bigger fish, saying he is eyeing the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier after UFC 242.
Chec out his comments during a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.
“He’s been fighting old men lately, he’s trying to fight Mark Wahlberg. Maybe that’s the fight for him. The dude’s got a couple of things, making his money, doing his thing. I don’t know if he wants to fight anymore, but he is not my concern.”
The Mark Wahlberg reference is due to the fact that Conor once called out the mega-movie star for a fight with all of his UFC ownership shares on the line.
Of course, a fight like that would never be made, but it seems Ferguson simply doesn’t think Conor is relevant in the fight game anymore.
“He is like one of those ex-girlfriends. I stopped worrying about that dude. At first he was in line trying to go for the title, and once he became irrelevant I stopped caring about him. Now he’s mentioning my name? Get the f*ck out of here dude, come on,” said Tony.
Ferguson has to know deep down that a fight against Conor will earn him the biggest paycheck of his career, even if he doesn’t think too highly of him at the moment.
Still, Ferguson says the chips where fall where they may and if he fights the winner of Khabib vs Poirier, then Conor should fight the loser. If all goes as planned, then they can meet up for a fight next year.
